Artist Statement

I believe there is beauty in truth.  My artistic honesty is achieved by producing art that fills the visual and spiritual voids in our human experiences.  I call my process ‘identifying art’, more so than making art. I am not attempting to turn materials into some ‘thing’. I help the soul of the material reveal it’s self.

Often the attraction to connect with the energy of a certain material reveals itself through prayer or meditation. At other times, I see an object or a material that seems to express it’s self to me as art. After identifying the art the next stage is a climatic experience of an exciting exchange of ‘conversing with the art’. This conversation is both metaphysical and soulful, and it allows us to decide how the materials will co-exist or share energy. My goal is to present its innate artistry.

Spherical shapes have been a reoccurring image in my work for many years. These spheres represent a spirit that is continuously linked to the earth. In the past I dealt with a great deal of social commentary in my work. Currently, my work is mostly a free stream of consciousness thought, mixed with elements of social commentary. This is an approach that I feel addresses the abstractions in our lives. Our experiences are not straight forward or linear scenarios with well defined boundaries. I see life as abstract and sometimes ambiguous, while concurrently presenting certain rhythms.  I judge my work by how well I stay in tune with these rhythms.

The current state of the environment has remained a frequent theme throughout my work. At times this interest is more apparent and at others it is more subdued. I incorporate wood, rope, steal, barb-wire and hundreds of other elements together to not only capture and combine their energies but also to remind the viewer of the beauty or the importance of the discarded object. As an artist, it is my mission to have the viewer create a greater understanding or appreciation of the elements of the past and present in order to create a balanced future.

I like many artists are pleased that the approach that we took towards addressing issues of the environment are now beginning to be practiced in the everyday lives of people ranging from reusing shopping bags to creating echo-friendly buildings. The power of the artist focused in many different aspects of human existence cannot be measured or underestimated.
